Arrival Vancouver

The flights were marathon, but everything went as smoothly as anyone could hope. We scored a row of seats to ourselves on an otherwise packed plane from Brisbane to Los Angeles, an easy passage through LAX and a snappy flight from LA to Vancouver.

We arrived in Vancouver with enough time to head down to the docks area and the appropriately named Water Street, for a beer or two at the Steamworks Brewhouse. It's a very well done hipster district down there with more artisanal craft dispensaries of just about anything you could want a bespoke example of. Including beer, as I mentioned. As always, I am envious of these northern hemisphere cities and their long, sunlit evenings.

A great start.

Hipsters heading for Water St: Vancouver already feels like a city that can change texture in a block. Where the hotel is, there are McDonalds and Starbucks... but head over a couple of blocks and the street changes completely.

Bespoke Quasi Flatiron Apartments: and from McDonalds, plate glass, veneer on concrete and brushed aluminium to this in a few blocks
Artisanal Late Evening Sunshine: they make it right there on Water St.
On the way home, slightly unspoked: I don't even remember taking this. Seep deprivation , real freshly baked pretzels, ribs and a few pints of a very nice rye stout can have that effect.

Part 1: Canada

This blog will chronicle a bit of a road trip I'm taking with an old mate, Jason. It's a bit of a departure for me, as there will be lots of travelling by car and lots of wilderness... rather than just a couple of cities and heaps of public transport.

The trip will pretty much be of two parts.

The first part will be a tour of a small part of British Columbia, Canada. Starting with a few days in Vancouver, we will be taking a ferry over to Vancouver Island and heading up to Port Hardy for five days in the north east corner. Obviously, Canada has the same issues with sheer scale as Australia, so I am very aware of how little of the country I will be seeing in the time we have.

Then, it's a day drive down to Victoria, before taking a ferry to Seattle and starting the US part; driving from Seattle to Los Angeles, largely along the Pacific Coast.

But... starting with Canada.
